AIMS Fire Mapping

The AIMS Fire Mapping software is a used for tracking bush and forest fires. First introduced in Australia where it has proven its effectiveness thoroughly, AIMS software provides the ideal union of thermal imagery, computer based mapping and peripheral devices such as GPS (Global Positiong System) and video encoders. AIMS provides for the collection of geo-located fire imagery and related data in a real-time setting.

Flying along the fire edge, AIMS Fire Mapping records the track which is synchronized with the imagery being recorded. Providing the aircraft is flown accurately, this track then represents the fire boundary. AIMS can also be used with additional sensors so that the aircraft can be flown at a distance away from the fire line. For situational awareness the computer displays a map annotated with the fire boundary. Notes and ‘targets’ (eg: problem spots, location of resources) may be added as soon as they are observed.

AIMS Fire Mapping allows for the transmission of still imagery and fire-line data while actually airborne over the fire ground. Data collection may include the fire’s current active edge, intensity, direction of advancement, fuel types and loadings, remaining hotspots, burnt out areas and the position of resources and unknown assets. The infrared and GPS location will also enable the plotting of hot spots on the fire ground. Useful for the purposes of crew tasking and identifying that blackout has been achieved, to reduce the risk of re-ignition.

A planned version of AIMS Fire Mapping will combine the attributes of this version with Real-Time Tracking software which will allow GPS tracking and management of fire fighters and assets involved in forest fire fighting.
